Hurricane Camille, which made landfall in southern Mississippi in August 1969, is recognized as one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever strike the United States. Classified as a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, Camille featured maximum sustained winds reaching 175 miles per hour (approximately 253 kilometers per hour), placing it in the highest operational classification of tropical cyclones. As the third named storm of the 1969 Atlantic hurricane season, Camille began its life as a tropical depression on August 14, originating south of Cuba from a protracted tropical wave similar to features that often precede significant storm formations in that region.
Following its origin, the storm underwent rapid strengthening, becoming a hurricane by August 15 when it impacted western Cuba. This number includes 55 indirect deaths, primarily attributed to cardiovascular stress exacerbated by the storm's aftermath. Beyond the human toll, Camille left in its wake widespread destruction, causing damages estimated at $1.42 billion at the time. This figure made it the most costly hurricane in U.S. history up to that point, eclipsing the previous record held by Hurricane Betsy, which struck in 1965.
